Abstract

The current conditions for competitiveness and survival in the professional market, to which all the higher education institutions are subjected to respond to the challenges of the new millennium, characterized by globalization, modernization of the economy and integration of the knowledge/information binomial, demand from the educational system a continuous improvement, allowing to attain quality processes and products. To look after the development and excellence in education is a commitment of every society, but in particular it is an imperative and a responsibility of the educational system and its institutions. Its fulfillment has a direct impact on the educational, social, economic, political and cultural transformations of the country. An overview on the librarian's education in Mexico is presented, and the environment of the information society, the library service, the professional librarian, the professional training of librarians, the curricula in force to obtain the bachelor's degree in the country and the current trends are also analyzed.
