Abstract

Objective: Value the usefulness that alphafetoprotein has in maternal serum in the obstetric practice. Design: Descriptive Study. Place: North Polyclinic from Camaguey Municipality in the province of the same name from January 1986 to December 1992. Patients: 160 pregnant women that had serum increasings of the alphafetoprotein during second trimester of pregnancy. Results: 4,37% of alphafetoprotein increasings was due to the presence of malformations, detected by ultrasonography examination, mainly anencephaly. 34,16% of pregnant women with increased alphafetoprotein and normal ultrasonography examination finished their gestation periods. Low birth weight and fetal loss were the most frequent disorders. Conclusions: Alphafetoprotein is a valuable biochemical marker for the diagnosis of congenital malformations and obstetric high risk pregnancies.
