Abstract

A preliminary, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out to determine the influence of stress on the prevalence and severity of the periodontal disease in members of the Armed Forces Ministry (MININT). The study covered the period from May to October, 1994. The sample was composed of 1 200 workers of prison and construction's organs with 20 and 45 years-old, 220 were selected through systematic screening, taking 55 for the preliminary study through EPIDAT program. A dental survey was design for measuring oral hygiene level, prevalence and severity of the periodontal disease and the Inventory Tests of Ansiety-Feature-State (IAFS) and the Pathological Ansiety Test (PAT) for the assessment of stress. With 95% of confidence it was obtained that 43,6% had mild and high signs of situational stress. The affection with higher prevalence was that of chronic-edging gingivitis (50,9%). Regular oral hygiene prevailed in the soldiers with mild (25,4%) and high (30,9%) stress.
