Abstract

EXPOSITO PARET, Elizabeth et al. Intimal proliferation and the coronary atherosclerotic lesion. Morpho-pathologic and morphometric study. AMC [online]. 1997, vol.1, n.2. ISSN 1025-0255.

The objective of the study was to analyze possible quantitative differences of the intimal proliferation, as well as atherosclerotic lesions of the two main branches of the coronary arteries, right coronary and anterior descending, and their eventual associations. It was a retrospective study for a consecutive sample of 50 deceased. Samples were taken from the Anatomo-Pathological Department of "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" Hospital, and processed in the Hystology Laboratory of the Superior Medical Institute of Camagüey. The sample was divided into two groups, of high atherosclerotic level (HAL) and of low atherosclerotic level (LAL) with 22 and 28 deceased, respectively. Primary data were summarized from the necropsy protocols and medical records. Atherosclerotic lesions were identified by Holman´s technic and mapped using a transparent acetate; tissue fragments were taken from the wall of both segments in predetermined zones for the measurement of intimal thickening; quantitative study was performed in a computed way through the digital processing of images. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) as well as comparative (Test "t" of student) and Pearson´s correlation were carried out with the statistical package NCSS for the measurement of atherosclerotic lesions and intimal proliferation. Higher values of the intimal proliferation measure mean were found in the anterior descending branch in the HAL group (0.2957), as well as means also were higher of variables related with the severity of the atherosclerotic process: fibrous plates (0.1268), severe plates (0.0446), total of atherosclerosis (0.2028), obstruction (0.3876), and stenosis (1.2295). The statistics of Pearson´s correlation showed positive significance among intimal proliferation and fibrous plates, the total of atherosclerosis and the obstruction rates and stenosis either for right coronary or the anterior descending arteries. The last one showed also positive correlation for severe plates, correlation was inverse and statistically significant in both arterial branches among the intimal proliferation and benignity rate. Concluding, the descending anterior artery was the arterial sector more affected by atherosclerotic lesions presenting higher values of intimal proliferation in the HAL group; and a strong association was observed among the intimal thickening and the atherosclerotic process.
