SIRE GOMEZ, Alexis; DOMINGO HALDAR, Lester; ALBORNOZ LOPEZ DEL CASTILLO, Carlos  y  GUERRERO SIFONTES, Genovevo. Fibrous dysplasia of maxillar. Presentation of two cases. AMC [online]. 1998, vol.2, n.1. ISSN 1025-0255.

Due to the frequency of occurrence of this disease, being the maxillary the site of greater localization; the purpose of this study is to show the clinical experiences in two cases treated in our institution. Source of Data: Literature accessible for this study and the medical records of treated patients, were reviewed. Selection of the study and summary of data: All information related with the two cases was selected, taking into account age, race, origen and localization as well as reported symptomatology, physical, radiological and pathohystological examinations. Synthesis of Data: Fibrous dysplasia is a disease that frequently affects the maxillae and the jaw; it is of unknown origen although authors talk about localized infections, and traumatisms; being these last ones the most accepted. A slight predominance of the femenine sex in children and young adults was observed; and the first clinical sign is pain; and inflammation. The mucosa is kept invariably in the zone of the lesion; there is also an acute malocclussion, with a marked facial deformity. Radiologically, three basic types of affections are presented, in which bone cortical substance becomes thinner, because of the natural extension of the tumour growing; the teeth roots are separated or moved off their normal position. The treatment of choice is surgical, which consists on the exeresis of the tumour in a conservative way, trying to excise it and avoiding as much as possible the facial deformity. In most cases of menostasia form, they have spontaneously transformed into malignant tumours as the osteosarcoma.
