TELLEZ PERAZA, Zenia; DYCE GORDON, Elisa y PIMENTEL BENITEZ, Hector. Concentration of uric acid and mental retardation in children with Dow`ns syndrome. AMC [online]. 1998, vol.2, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1025-0255.
A study was carried out for measuring serum levels of uric acid and for analyzing the existence of a possible relationship among found levels and the mental retardation in 34 patients with Down's syndrome, assisted at the Genetics Service of the Pediatric Specialities Polyclinic of Camagüey. Uric Acid determination was performed by the colorimetric method of Henri-Sobel- Kim, with subjects in fasting state. The intelligence quotient (IQ) was measured using the Elemental Phsychological Test (MPT) and besides chromosomic studies were done for knowing syndrome etiology. The great majority of children had free trysimy (88,2%). The IQ ranged from 30 to 60 with a mean value of 43. The uric acid level increased in both sexes. A slight positive correlation was observed among uric acid concentration and the IQ.
