Abstract

ALVAREZ PEREZ, René et al. Use of hyperbaric oxygenation in nitrites poisoning. AMC [online]. 2002, vol.6, n.6, pp.640-644. ISSN 1025-0255.

A patient assisted in the emergency deparment of our hospital with neurologic signs is presented. He was admitted with a presumptive diagnosis of ischemic apoplexy; when his clinical picture worsened, then, he presented important cyanosis and after interviewing his family, we knew about the existence of nitrites in his house and the possibility of his accidental ingestion as common salt. It was interpreted as a toxic methahemoglobinemia, and treatment was indicated with methylene blue and hyperbaric oxygenation at 2 ATA during 50 minutes of isopressure on the firts day and continuing with three days more with excellent results.

Keywords : HYPERBARIC OXYGENATION; NITRITES [poisoning].
