Abstract

A study was carried out in patients admitted in the intensive care unit at " Manuel Ascunce Domenech" Provincial Hospital of Camagüey within the period from September 1st, 1999 to February 2000 who weres subjected to a deop approach with the aim of evaluating the role of intravascular infection in grave patient. Those included in the study, a direct microscopic exam with Gram stain and semiquantitative culture in the tip of the catheter as well as hemoculture were performed . The percentage of negative cases colonized and with infection of the blood flow related with the intravascular catheter, was determined. It was evaluted the usefulness of the combination of direct exam and culture for diagnosis these infections; and main ,microorganism causing colonization and infections of the blood flow, as well as its drug susceptibility, were identified.
