Abstract

A prospective, descriptive study was carried out in the Neurology service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Hospital of Havana city within the period from March 1999 to January 2000 to know dementia frequency in patients with Parkinson's. Disease ( PD). A group of 55 patients carriers of the disease (PD) of the diseaes; to whom diagnostic criterio of DSM IV Dementia and Foltein's test were applied , and the influence of a group of variables potentially related to the appearence of cognitive disorders was analized. It was observed in the investigation that the frequency of dementia was that of 34, 5 %; the greater neurophysiological shown by MMS test in the demented were in orientation, evocationme memory, writing and attention, preserving relativing the capacity for language comprehension. Variables associated with dementic resulted in the severity of Parkinson's disease and educational level of patients. The study performed concluded that dementes in Parkinson's disease is a entity different from Alzheimer's.
