A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 364 patients electively selected for being surgically intervened by general surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedia specialities. The study was performed at Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Hospital of Camagüey, from July to September 2002, with the aim of evaluating the level of information received by the patients before the anesthetic and surgical intervention. Those patients, who had a deteriorated clinical state and were not competent for taking a decision, were excluded. It was found that the 22, 25 % and 21, 70 % of patients did not know the risk that this surgical anesthetic intervention may bring about, respectively. The 82, 41 % of patients did not receive any information about surgical risks, this percentage was asked their consent for surgery, figure even lower for the anesthetic method used (7, 97 %). There was a low level of knowledge of patients about the medical intervention performed and few information given, more accentuated when the anesthetic risk were treated; patients who were not asked the informed consent prevailed. Data were statistically processed, it was accepted as significant a value of P< 0.05.
