Abstract

LA FONTAINE TERRY, Ernesto; SANCHEZ LUEIRO, Mayra; PUGH PROVOST, Samuel  and  ESTRADA CANOSA, Humberto. Maternal morbimortality in obstetric hysterectomy of emergency. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.1, pp.73-82. ISSN 1025-0255.

A retrospective and descriptive study was conducted at the Ana Betancourt de Mora Maternity Hospital, city of Camagüey, from 1997 to 2003 to determine the mortality rate among mothers as caused by obstetric hysterectomy. To such end, 124 patients that had undergone emergency hysterectomy while still puerperant were assessed. Age and obstetric events, as well as moment of, causes of, and complications of delivery were the variables dealt with. Patients aged 20 to 34 prevailed (101cases), while 49, 2 % of those that were operated on had a previous partum, and 75, 0 % had a pregnancy within term. Premature rupture of the membranes(26 cases), and a previous cesarean section (20 cases) were the most frequent events , the latter ranking first in prevalence (50, 8 %).The highest hysterectomy rate (49, 2 %) was reached during the postpartum days whereas uterine atony ranked first (42, 8 %). During the first operation 56 patients had their hypogastric artery knotted. Sepsis prevailed as a complication (14 cases) whereas 97,6 of the patients survived and 2, 4 % did not.
