Resumen

A restrospective study was carried out to universe of 600 patients who were remitted to the Gastroenterology service at the Military Hospital of Camagüey city from August 2001 to July 2002 and subjected to the endoscopy of the upper digestive tract with the aim of evaluating Helicobacter pylori prevalence in our environment. According to the inclusion criteria the study sample was composed of 340 patients (192 women and 148 men) among 20 and 80 years old. Biopsies were taken to each patient at the antrogastric level for microbiologic study (Rapid Ureasa Test) (RUT). The 78 % of patients were positive for H. pylori, significant differences according to the sex of infected persons were not found. The higher prevalence of Helicobacter pylori corresponded to the fourth and fifth decade of life. Infection distribution as to the endoscopy diagnosis behaved in the following way endoscopy normal 47 % chronic antral gastritis 95 %, duodenal ulcer 96 % and gastric ulcer 75 %. The RUT gave a specificity of 100 % and sensitivity 90 % very high results. The global percentage of positivity as wells as its distribution as to the gastroduodenal diseases described, with the important risk factor for the acquisition of this bacteria is the low socioeconomic status of the child, hacination in the house, sharing of beds, and the absence of fluent water at home are determinant factors in its acquisition.
