Resumen

DIAZ RACET, Aide; RACET CARMENATES, Yazarai; DIAZ RODRIGUEZ, Eduardo  y  REYES BALSEIRO, Evelio S.. Infant mortality prevalence in Nuevitas: an eleven-year study. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.4, pp.57-66. ISSN 1025-0255.

To assess infant mortality prevalence over a period of 11 years, a descriptive study was conducted. Out of 63 infants who died, 57, 14 % were aged less than 29 days. Early neonatal mortality rate (44, 44 %) ranked first, followed by postneonatal mortality rate (42, 86%). Sepsis (30, 16 %) and inborn malformation (25, 40 %) were the main causes of death for both the within-term newborn and the pre-term newborn. The most relevant biologic maternal factors were a past history of more than 3 abortions (58, 70 %), followed by smoking habit (46, 00 %). Poor education (47, 62 %) and bachelorhood (42, 86 %) were the most relevant social factors. We conclude that most deaths occurred among newborns less than 29 days of age, being sepsis the main cause for death.

Palabras clave : INFANT MORTALITY; RISK FACTORS; BIOLOGICAL FACTORS; ABNORMALITIES [mortality]; SEPSIS; INFANT NEWBORN.
