Resumen

GARCIA-ROCO PEREZ, Oscar; DEL RIO MENDEZ, Douglas; POZO ROMERO, Antonio  y  CORREA MORENO, Alfredo. Experimental single device alveolar ridge distraction. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.4, pp.88-98. ISSN 1025-0255.

To test a single screw devise for deficient alveolar ridge augmentation by distraction osteogenesis, and to assess the local tissue reactions, a preclinical, one- centered, aleatory, trial was conducted with 10 pedigreed beagles grouped in two (experimental and control) following the lottery  method from January 2003 to December 2003. The trial spanned four stages: pulling both groups of beagles’ jaw premolars, followed by alveoloplasty to create an atrophic area which, among the control group, remained untreated. On week 12 the experimental group underwent osteotomy to allow for the building up of a rectangular, conveying segment thus making it possible to the distracting device. After 7-day latency period, vertical osseous elongation (1.0mm per day for 7 days) took place, followed by an 8 week fixation period. The distraction site was subjected both to x-ray and histologic testing. An average vertical augmentation of 6, 53 +- 0, 21 mm was reached after distraction was completed and an augmentation of 5, 81+-0, 43 mm was reached after consolidation was completed. A satisfactory osteogenesis with mature bone was visible. As to the control group, alveolar atrophy followed its natural progress and scarring became visible, whereas oseous remodelling underwent a vertical loss of 1.05+-0.5 mm upon x-ray testing. Histological, no morphologic difference between the site subjected to surgery and its surrounding area was appreciated. We conclude that although the intramouth distraction device is a novel technique, and the results it has yielded are still variable, it is-experimentally-both an effective and viable tool to achieve a certain oseous mass growth at a certain position.
