A case study that involved controls was conducted to assess risk factors for low birth weigh from Octuber 2002 in April 2004 in nine municipalities of the Province of Camagüey, 364 cases and 654 controls were assessed through natal care clinical records and a poll. Data processing involved both univaried and bivaried methods. Adolescent mothers (P < 0.00839), mothers over age 35 (P<0.00014) single mothers (P<0.00200), smoking mothers (P<0.00004), and mothers with a short interpregnancy period (P<0.00002) were associated to low birth weigh. And so were mothers with preeclampsia-eclampsia (P<0.00018), mothers at risk of preterm parturition (P< 0.0000), mothers with preterm membrane rupture (P<0.00000), with subtle symptom of preterm parturition (P<0.00000), with cervicovaginal infection (P<0.00000), with insufficient weight gain (P<0.00000), and with chronic arterial hypertension (P<0.03355). Urinary infection, diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma, cardiopaties, and being a working mother were and contributing causes. There findings are expected to improve primary health care strategies.
