Through the years several techniques for esophageal replacement have been used. Esophageal replacement using the colon was the first procedure to be adopted for children in our country. The lack of studies on the subject in our province prompted us to write this paper, which we did whit the objective of describing our procedure to adopted for children in our country. The lack of studies on the subject in our province prompted us to write this paper, which we did with the objective of describing our results. So we conducted a descriptive study of 22 children who were subject to esophageal replacement (using the colon) at the Dr. Eduardo Agramonte Piña Provincial Children's Hospital from January 1994 to December 31st 2003. The 22 children were the universe and the sample. Clinical records were the data source. A from for data gathering was devised. The results were processed through descriptive statistics and frequency distribution methods. Children aged 1-4 was the prevailing age group. The main cause for surgery was secondary esophageal stenosis as caused by caustic fluid ingestion (17 children 77, 29 %). The long-term results were considered to be good ones (16 patients, 72, 73 %). The colon makes one % of the best substitutes for the esophagus. And esophagoplasty is still a therapeutic option when esophageal substitution is necessary for it is accompanied by few complications.
