CASTILLO FERNANDEZ, Frank Alberto y NAVAS ABALOS, Noris. Assessment of fetal biophysical profile in post-term pregnancy. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.2, pp.21-31. ISSN 1025-0255.
A prospective, descriptive study was conducted at the Ana Betancourt de Mora Maternity Hospital, city of Camagüey, from July to December 2004 to assess fetal biophysical profile in postterm pregnancy. 370 women over 42week of pregnancy that is, 294 days from the first day of the last menses, confirmed through ultrasonography (on the 22nd week or on the 26th week) were surveyed. Average age of postterm pregnants was 25, 94/-0, 65. As regards parity, nuliparous women prevailed. Upon evaluating intrauterine well-being, fetal biophysical profile was suspicious and/or pathologic in 41 pregnants. Prevailed as a variable of negative effects fetal respiratory movements, fetal cardiac reactivity, measured through cardiotocography; the amniotic fluid rate (that is, the sum of contents of amniotic sacs) of 63 profiles (18, 6 %) reached a critical value of five or less, whereas the rate of 30 profiles (8, 9 %) reached a moderate value. It was proven that in this series the degree of placental maturity was inversely proportional to the volume of amniotic fluid. Once again, our results proved that the fetal biophysical profile is an efficient tool for the follow-up of postterm pregnancy.
