MALPICA RIVERO, José Arturo; HEREDIA ACOSTA, Liset; RAMIREZ TORRES, Ángela  y  FIGUEREDO GUERRA, Pedro. Arterial hipertensión in elders. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.2, pp.73-86. ISSN 1025-0255.

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Internal Medicine Service of the M. Ascunce Domenech Provincial Hospital, Camaguey City, from January 2003 to February 2004 to asses clinical and epidemiologic issues related to arterial hypertension in elders. From out of a universe of 162 elders, 56 were selected at random, taking a trust interval of 95 %. Variables such as age, sex, skin color, risk factors, complications, and disease management were assessed. Patients were grouped by arterial pressure rates and by risk. Data processing took place automatically. The 60-69 age group prevailed (37, 66.07 %) and so did females (42, 75 %). 24 patients (42, 85 %) were classified as stage I, where 30 sorted for the risk group B. 33, 92 % (19 patients) were smokers. The most common complication was left ventricle hypertrophy (28, 50 %). A proportional relation between complications and clinical status of hypertension was proved.
