Abstract

HERNANDEZ MOORE, Elizabeth; DUANY AMARO, Antia; DELGADO MARIN, Neyda  and  JIMENEZ MOREJON, Jalima. Treatment of recurrent: Intussusception through hydrostatic reduction. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.3, pp.70-80. ISSN 1025-0255.

A descriptive study of recurrent intussusceptions treated by hydrostatic enemas using saline under ultrasound guidance in the Camagüey “Eduardo Agramonte Piña” Children’s Hospital between January 2001 and December 2005 is presented. There were 6 recurrent intussusceptions, which represents a 10,1% of recurrences, among 59 intussusceptions in that time. The 6 recurrences had been treated initially by hydrostatic reduction with saline and occurred in 5 children, 4 with one episode of recurrence and 1 with 2 episodes; 4 presented within 24 hours of the previous event and the remaining 2 occurred after 3 and 6 months, respectively. All the recurrences were reduced by ultrasound-guided saline enemas. There were no complications during or after the reduction procedure. A pathologic lead point was not demonstrated in any patient. In our experience, the treatment of recurrent intussusception by hydrostatic reduction with saline using sonographic guidance has been considered effective. We recommend the hospitalization of patients for 24 hours after reduction of intussusception, which is the most frequent time of recurrences.
