A 1.1 paired nonconcurrent study of cohort was conducted to assess the effects of preconceptive maternal low weight (maternal malnutrition by defect) on pregnancy, parturition, and the newborn at the Finlay  Polyclinic of the Municipality of Camagüey from October 2002 to April 2004. 51 malnourished pregnant women were assessed together with 51 pregnant women under no risk. Data were taken from perinatal care records to which data yielded by a poll were added. Data processing took place through bivaried and univaried methods. Preconceptive maternal low weight proved a contributing cause for early amnioc sac breakage (RR=14,181; P< 0,0002, IC 95 %, 1,71789-8,6109, FE= 0,73), cervicovaginal infection (RR=4,327), P<0-0011, IC 95 % 1,57363-11,89749, FE=0,760). A significant statistical difference was noted between maternal malnourishment by defect and short intergenesial cycle (RR= 1,923, P≥0,0585, IC 95 % , 0,95529-3,87132) and the risk for preterm parturition (RR= 4,587, P< 0,097, IC 95 % ,0,85871-52. 757160),whereas the subject being studied was to ferropenic anemia (RR=18,763, P< 0,00000, IC 95 %,1,54 637-3,83711) and low birth weight (RR=8,654, P<0,0097,IC 95 %, 1,13749.65,83712). No statistical association was found between the subject under study and low schooling, occupation, gravidic hypertension, among others. Main outcomes were premature amniotic sac breakage, cervicovaginal infection , a higher probability for a short intergenesic period, risk for preterm parturition and ferropenic anemia, which suggests the necessity to work harder on conditions that are adverse to mating, starting from the preconceptive period.
