Abstract

A descriptive prospective study was conducted to profile the incidence of toracotomies at the Manuel Ascunce Domenech General Hospital from January 2002 to January 2004. 69 patients who had underwent major toracotomies were enrolled for the universe. Male patients aged 45-64 prevailed. Lung neoplasia and traumatic hemothorax were the prevailing diagnoses and vertical axilar incision was the preferred one, followed lung suture. 40,6 %of patients who were operated on suffered from complications, being atelectasias the prevailing one (34,5 %). 8,7 % of patients died mainly from hypovolemic shock.
