An analytic territorial study of health care services provided through the Alternative Medicine Program implemented in the municipality of Camagüey was conducted from March 2000 to March 2005 to assess the knowledge and use of alterative therapies. 978 persons from the field of nursing (nurses with and without a bachelor’s degree) were enrolled for the universe. The sample amounted to 70 % of the universe (619). Participants in the study were surveyed and administered and examination of competence in the topic with the consent of the Municipal Head of Nursing. Dependent variables were: Knowledge of and use of alternative therapies. Independent variables were: occupational category, knowledge, alternative medicine application, criteria for patient follow-up, research done. Information gathered through the survey and the competence examinations, designed to match the objectives, was processed through statiscal model, which evaluated the results from the variables being studied. Knowledge and use of alternative therapy were satisfactory.
