Abstract
CABRERA VILLALOBOS, Yanelys; HIDALGO HIDALGO, Siomara; DIAZ GOMEZ, Silvia María and CARDOSO NAVARRO, Ignacio. The effectiveness of acupuncture in the pain-dysfunction syndrome of the temporomandibular system. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.5, pp.70-80. ISSN 1025-0255.
A clinical trial, late stageII,of therapeutic exploration, open, parallel and not sequential, was developed, with the objective to assess the acupuncture’s effectiveness in front of the neuromyorelaxant plaque in the pain-dysfunction syndrome of the temporomandibular system in the Dental clinic “La Vigía” of Camagüey, a morphofunctional exam of the occlusion according to the Krough Poulsen test, was applied. Twenty patients were selected according to inclusion criteria, and established exclusion that were divided into two groups (A&C) acupuncture study (A) and the neuromyorelaxant control plaque (C) randomly by the “closed envelope method”. Results were processed through the Statistical Package SPS for Windows, version 10.6 and also it was applied the Hypothesis proportion Test (Signification p<0, 05) to prove effectiveness. All patients showed signs and symptoms, except the noise, which persisted between 50&40% in the two studied groups, respectively. Therapies did not change the occlusal parameters. Nevertheless, articular and muscular pain were eliminated. Complications with acupuncture were not presented; just two patients had difficulties to neuromyorelaxant plaque adaptation. It was considered that acupuncture is an effective modality as the first option treatment o the syndrome. Oral opening restriction constituted a disadvantage in order to prepare the plaque. Eventhough, it did not modificate he occlusal variables were efficient without significant differences to relieve pain, thanks to muscular discontraction it was able to obtain an adequate centric relation and corroborate in the Dentatus ARL articulator, the occlusal study. The educative booklet helped in the self-care and management of the illness.
