A study about exchange transfusion in the severe polywonded patients and with sepsis picture admitted in the polywonded ward at Manuel Ascunce Domenech Teaching Provincial Hospital of Camagüey was performed, from January 2003 to February 2005.The universe was constituted by 20 patients, the age group most affected was the 30-40 years with nine cases. Out of 45 exchange transfusion carried out, 30 were performed from the fourth to the seventh days with magnificent results, the complication most frequent was the metabolic acidosis with nine cases, followed by the metabolic alkalosis with six cases. Best results were in relation to the precocity of the procedure and not with the higher number. Out of 20 sick persons, four deceased, two caused by sepsis, one by severe cerebral edema and another with myocardial infarction. The exchange transfusion demonstrated being a useful procedure in the remaining 16 patients.
