Abstract

CASARES ALBERNAS, Fermín; HERRERA LORENZO, Orestes; INFANTE FERRER, José  and  VARELA HERNANDEZ, Ariel. Guillain-Barré syndrome. diagnosis and treatment updating. AMC [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.3. ISSN 1025-0255.

A bibliographical revision was carried out where the main changes occurred were undertaken in recent years in relation to the immunopathogenesis, diagnosis, clinical forms and treatment.  Historical aspects, main diagnostic methods accepted internationally, the therapeutic measures approved by the evidence and some of the main challenges and controversies related to diagnosis and treatment, are commented. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a frequent, autoimmune and controllable illness although potentially mortal, many of its symptoms and signs can be confused with several neurological affections, for which its premature diagnosis is very important to establish in brief time limit the specific measures destined to preserve the life, above all in children and young patients. In absence of a more specific biological marker for the diagnosis, is recommended to utilize the clinical criteria, as well as the therapeutic measures of the American Academy of Neurology.

Keywords : guillain-barre syndrome [diagnosis]; guillain-barre syndrome [therapy].
