Abstract

The Doppler ultrasonography is the most utilized image method in the study of the carotids thus offers a non invasive evaluation to detect  atheromatous plaques as cause of cerebral thromboembolism, permits to define its characteristics and the degree of stenosis that produce, and constitutes many times the only study before the surgery or the placement of stent. Its utility has been shown as screening method of cardiovascular risk in asymptomatic patients and in the diagnosis of other no atherosclerotic affections, nevertheless, there is no uniformity yet in the achievement and interpretation of the exam which depends in great measure of the lack standardized exam protocols that are carried out for a properly personnel  trained. A review of the current state of the carotid Doppler echography is done, its indications, the protocols of exam and the employed diagnostic criteria.
