Abstract

CONDE FORCADA, Carlos; FERRER TAN, Ismael J; FERRER HERRERA, Ismael M  and  GUEVARA COUTO, Víctor. Cerebral malaria.: Use of the quinine in continuous endovenous infusion in the intensive care unit. AMC [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.4. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: The dreadful malaria or cerebral malaria is the responsible for around a million annual deaths. Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of the treatment with quinine in continuous endovenous infusion. Method: A late II phase clinical trial was carried out in 78 patients with cerebral malaria admitted in the intensive care unit at the Royal Victory of Banjul Educational Hospital, The Gambia, compared with the treatment of intermittent infusion performed in equal period in the 2006. Results: A reduction of the deadliness in patients with cerebral malaria was appreciated, with the use of the continuous infusion of quinine statistically significant, of a 48.1% in the 2006 to a 37.17% in the 2007 (p <0.001). Conclusions: A statistically significant reduction of the deadliness was found, of the frequency of the associated and own complications to this entity and the mortality because of these, as well as a more premature recovery, although with high frequency of adverse reactions in more than the half of the sickpeople.
