Abstract

Educational intervention on high blood pressure in geriatric patients. AMC [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.4. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: High blood pressure constitutes the first cardiovascular risk factor in geriatric patients. Objective: To raise the knowledge level on high blood pressure in a geriatric patients group. Method: An educational intervention study with quantitative design was carried out in the local # 40 at "Joaquín de Agüero y Agüero" Polyclinic between November 2005 and May 2007. The universe was constituted by 70 older adults; the sample remained conformed by 55 of them, which an initial survey was applied to identify the needs on high blood pressure learning. Results: At the beginning the knowledge level was regular in the 49, 1% of patients and wrong in the 43, 3 %, these results were reverted in the second section, where the 89, 1% reach the good mark in the qualitative evaluation. Initially conceptual mistakes were identified and ignorance in some aspects. For the second section all these aspects were improved, more than the 80% of the older adults answered correctly. Conclusions: The usefulness of educational interventions so as to increase the adult knowledges in relation to the non- pharmacologic treatment of high blood pressure was shown.
