Background: The problems of aging demands knowing the role of the old man within the structure and the family dynamic, the nature of the relationships with their sons and the ways of inter-generational solidarity as a fundamental element for the analysis of the quality of life in old age. Objective: To characterize the family attention to the old men. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional type of study in the 7 area of the Cartanal parish, Independencia municipality of Miranda state at the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the year 2007. The universe of study was composed of the totality of the old men of 60 years and more (77) to which were applied a formulary with different variables. Results: It was found a 66.2% of the old men with family inattention at the expense of lack of affection fundamentally (33.8%); Predominated in this group the age older than 70 years, the female sex (60.8%) and the widowed marital status (50.9%). The great number of unattended senescents were coming from dysfunctional families and of them a 51.0% referred physical mistreatment. Conclusions: The satisfaction in relation to their age kept correspondance with the attention offered by their relatives.
