Background: The intent of vaccination historically has accompanied man who has been about finding real protection against the infectious diseases that decimated whole towns. Objective: To apply an educational intervention to elevate the level of knowledge to children's mothers vaccinated up to 18 months of age. Method: An intervention experimental study at “José Martí” Polyclinic was conducted, to elevate the level of mothers' knowledge about the vaccines that start to their children until the 18 months of age. The universe was constituted by 479 mothers (of all the newborns from July 1st 2006 to December 31st 2007 that were 480, there was a gemellary delivery); the sample was conformed by 135 mothers, selected through a simple random sampling to those were applied a questionnaire. Results: It was showed up that before receiving the educational tasks were scarce the knowledge that mothers possessed about the importance of the immunization for their children which vaccinates are put until the 18 months, its concept as well as the diseases eliminated in our country and those protected by the vaccines. As well as their contraindications and the adverse reactions that can take place in the moment of the immunization. Conclusions: At the beginning of the investigation mothers had little knowledge on the vaccines that are put to their children, after the intervention a significant increase was achieved, that is why the intervention was considered effective.
