Background: Every person has an image, concept and oneself valuation that largely regulates and directs their behavior, plans and future projects. The loss of any part of the body is not easily accepted by most of the people. If it refers particularly to the face areas their acceptance it is even more difficult. Objectives: To determine the requested necessity of buccomaxillofacial prosthesis in Camagüey municipality. Method: A descriptive study in the population of Camagüey municipality was performed with the objective of identifying the necessities of buccomaxillofacial prosthesis according to demographic variables of age, sex, type of defect and causes, from June 2006 to June 2007. Results: One hundred twenty-five patients were identified as affected in the studied population, representing a rate of prevalence of 3.8 for 10 000 inhabitants. The most frequent defects were the ocular and the traumatic etiology prevailed regarding the rest; the most affected age group was that of 60 years and more; and the greater quantity of cases corresponded to the masculine sex. Conclusions: The general rate of prevalence of the necessity of buccomaxillofacial prosthesis in Camagüey municipality were about 3,8 for each 10 000 inhabitants with a total of one hundred twenty-five affected patients. The age with bigger risk that suffered these defects was the 35-59 year-old group. The masculine sex prevailed with these facial defects. The lesion of greater number of patients was the ocular one with 81 affected. The most frequent etiologic factor turned out to be the traumatism.
