SANTANA ALVAREZ, Jorge; MIRANDA RAMOS, María de los Ángeles  and  SANTANA CAJIGAL, Jorge Yenier. Ethics and the patient with cancer. AMC [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.3. ISSN 1025-0255.

A bibliographical review on the ethics and the patient with cancer was performed. After revising the most novel aspects in the contemporary literature, an itemized analysis on ethics, their origins, criteria and novel concepts when facing the patient with cancer is carried out. In accordance with our experience in the clinical, therapeutic and psychological management to the patients with cancer, some considerations are made, taking in the practice the opinions of 230 patients carriers of cancer with different stages and localizations. With a psychologist´s advising it were applied the abbreviated Rotter Test to each patient, with the purpose of knowing realization, motivation and interest purposes, autovaluation, self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, attitudes and conflicts. In 27% of the patients, personal realization purposes were scarce after knowing the diagnosis. Undervaluation in 40% of the patients, the 50% expressed the need of help and understanding. The 95% of patients showed suffering because of the disease. Finally the 96% of patients expressed immense desires to live. As conclusion the doctor should approach the patient with cancer using the truth ethically bearable, to strengthen the fight mechanisms and to improve the quality of life and the survival in the face of such a painful disease.
