Abstract

Background: it constitutes a health problem and a challenge for modern society to attain a satisfactory longevity because every day there are more old people with repercussion at all of the social structure levels. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of exercises and self-stimulation of acupunctural points based on the hypothesis that these would improve physical and psychological state of these people. Method: an intervention study in people of the old age related to the grandparents´ house of the Teaching Community Polyclinic "Julio Antonio Mella" of Camagüey city was carried out, from april 1st to june 30, 2008. The universe and the sample were constituted by thirty people of the old age. A program was introduced based on general orientations, exercises and self-stimulation of acupunctural points. A survey was applied made for this investigation, before and after the intervention, where the variables were: sex, age, marital status, school level, besides physical-emotional state of patients. Results: the negative emotional states were eliminated in most of patients. Conclusions: when concluding the treatment had disappeared more than the half of the symptoms presented in the first survey and most of patients obtained positive modification in more than the half of the symptoms, for what was considered effective the therapy.
