Resumen

LEGANOA ALONSO, Jacqueline et al. Stomatological attention assessment previous to radiotherapy for head and neck tumors. AMC [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.2. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: the oral state assessment and the eradication of buccal diseases before radiotherapy are the most important measures to reduce the risk of oral and systemic complications. Objective: to evaluate the stomatological attention previous to radiotherapy in patients with head and neck tumors. Method: a descriptive study in system and health service was performed in the Provincial Oncological Hospital Madame Curie of Camagüey city, from December 2007 to April 2008. For the selection of these patients were taken into account the diagnostic and inclusion criteria. The universe and the sample for the study coincided and it was constituted by fifty patients. Results: the 60% of patients presented local risk factors as dental caries and periodontal disease. Tabacism was the behavior factor that prevailed. The 57% of patients were not assisted in the stomatology services. Mucositis reigned in 100% of the irradiated patients. Conclusions: the inherent causes to the stomatological services determined that more than half of patients did not receive attention. Buccal complications were presented in all the patients without respecting the condition of being healthy or not. The prioritized and opportune stomatological attention previous to radiations only achieved the fifth part of the studied patients.
