Abstract

Background: articular degenerative diseases constitute an important cause of pain and loss of function, among them knee joint is one of the most affected. Objective: to show the behavior of knee osteoarthritis in a group of patients from Venezuela. Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed in 152 patients diagnosed and treated by knee osteoarthritis attended in the orthopedic and traumatology consultation ASIC UD-1, Caricuao, Principal District in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela from July 2008 to July 2009. Results: The female sex in a 73,6 % consisted significantly; the mean age was about 62,7 years. The most frequent causes of secondary osteoarthritis were: angular deformity 50 %, post-surgical 5,2 %, trauma 3,9 % and infectious ones 3.2 %. Bicompartmental affection represented the greater incidence in a 40,7 %. The radiographic stage that prevailed was the grade two and three of Kellgram with a 42,1 % and 35,5 % respectively. Osteoarthritis of hip articulation was the most associate to the knee one with a 60,6 %. Conclusions: knee osteoarthritis is more frequent in the female sex of the studied Venezuela’s population and especially bicompartmental affection.
