Background: the attention to the family, from any perspective, constitutes a need, if it is wishes to progress in the promotional, preventive and recoverable strategies, at all health levels and in particular in the primary attention where may be strengthen the links with the community. Young couples particularly, the ones are in the stage of family life cycle formation, constitute propitious systems to facilitate them help, make them aware of the psychological and social resources that may favor its effective functioning, as in this phase, mutual knowledge, establishment of standards, hierarchies, rules, traditions are initiated. This research corresponds to the first stage of a research project to favor the functioning in couples with these characteristics. Objective: to diagnose the functionality in the sampled population at the stage of family life cycle formation, as from the characterization of biological, psychological and social aspects of young couples at the district Cándido González Morales. Methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was accomplished; surveys to characterize 366 couples of the district which constitute the population and to explore learning needs, as well as a test to explore the perception of family functioning was applied. For information processing were used techniques and procedures of descriptive statistics, summary measures for qualitative variables (percentage). Results: of the 366 young couple characterized, 265 agreed the help of specialists and more than the 50 percent are placed in the dysfunctional range, which constituted the sample for the investigation and intervention of the second phase of the mentioned project. Conclusions: the majority of couples are dysfunctional and feel the need to learn to work better.
