Background: patients older than 60 years old with acute respiratory insufficiency have a better evolution if they are applied a non invasive ventilatory mode. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of the non invasive mechanical ventilation in a group of patient older than 60 years. Method: a quasiexperimental study was carried out in a group of patients older than 60 years with acute respiratory insufficiency admitted in the serious patient care ward at the University Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech of Camagüey, from April 1st 2008 to April 1st 2009. Results: the age group with more representation was the one of 70-80 years; in patients where non invasive mechanical ventilation was applied, and pneumonia was the cause with more frequency this ventilatory mode was used, the non favorable evolution caused the biggest percent in failures, the half of all patients with non invasive mechanical ventilation presented a hospital stay lower than seven days and mortality was below in these patients. Conclusions: the results of the study show a decrease of hospital stay in these wards and a reduction of mortality in the group of patients which the non invasive mechanical ventilation was applied.
