Resumen

Background: breast cancer is one of the most frequent in the female population, it represents the 18.4 %, and therefore it is necessary to take precautions for its quickly diagnostic and basic condition for its possible healing process. Objective: to increase the knowledge level on the early detection of breast cancer. Method: an educational intervention study was performed in women belonging to the University Teaching Polyclinic Tula Aguilera, in Camagüey province, in the year 2009. The study universe was constituted by 352 female patients, applying a probability sampling of 54 patients, an initial questionnaire related to their knowledge on breast cancer definition, its characteristics, risk factors and breast self-examination technique was applied. Subsequently an educational program on the interest aspects was established and three months later the same questionnaire was applied. Results were processed of computerized form, applying statistical measures of frequency distribution and percent; they were expressed in texts and tables. Results: Ignorance prevailed over the breast cancer definition and its clinical characteristics before the educational intervention.  The 81.4 % of patients identified as the main risk factor having over 40 years old, as well as a 75.9 % of them indicated family history as risk to suffer breast cancer and they presented little knowledge on breast self-examination technique in women. Conclusions: ignorance prevailed over breast cancer definition, clinical characteristics, risk factors and breast self-examination technique which were modified after having finished the educational intervention.
