Abstract

Background: postoperative infection is a complication with a high social and economic cost; sometimes it may cause the death of the patient, therefore the importance of preventing and treating this disease in time. Objective: to assess the behavior and results of the prophylactic antimicrobial therapy in a basic working group. Method: a descriptive observational study was conducted in the University Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech, from December 2009 to July 2010. Constituted the sample of the study 93 patients, prophylactic antimicrobial therapy was applied. Results: the average age was 43.5 years. Female-male sex relation from 2 to 1, 4 were observed. The method was mostly applied in 28 patients with closed fractures which internal fixation was performed. Cefazolin was the most widely used antimicrobial, 35 patients presented one or more risk factors associated with infection, one of them developed postoperative infection. Conclusions: the prophylactic antimicrobial therapy is effective in the prevention of postoperative infection.
