Background: the evaluative systematization of health care quality as a triad constituted the conceptual and methodological evolution of the tendencies of quality in the health sector. Objective: to implement an assessment tool to measure health care quality in patients proposed for non-cardiac elective surgery. Method: a cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with patients proposed for non-cardiac elective surgery from January 2007 to January 2012 at the University Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech. Results: Hosmer and Lemeshow statistical test was applied for quality evaluation of the regression model adjustment. Variables of readmission and surgery per region turned out to be significant. For patients that underwent a trunk surgery, probabilities of dying decreased in respect with those patients who were surgically intervened by the head or by the lower limbs. Conclusions: a useful tool for the detection of quality problems in the health care in patients proposed for non-cardiac elective surgery was implemented.
