Background: lumbar spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal, lateral recess and root canal, of congenital or acquired cause. Its prevalence in Cuba is about 6 % of the population and it is one of the main causes of lumbar or sciatic pain in adults over 40 years. Objective: to characterize the results of the surgical treatment in degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis at the University Hospital Amalia Simoni in Camagüey. Method: a prospective and descriptive study was conducted from January 2009 to September 2011 in a non-probabilistic sample of 27 patients selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. For data analysis, descriptive statistics techniques were used. Results: a greater incidence in males between 60-69 years old was obtained. Monosegmentary stenoses were more frequent and the fourth and fifth lumbar segment the most affected. After surgical techniques were applied, the studied patients improved from disability to minimal functional limitation in the group of pure decompression and moderate functional limitation in the group of decompression and stabilization. Postoperative pain and infection of surgical wound were the most common complications. Conclusions: the surgical treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis improved the clinical status of patients with low comorbidity
