Resumen

MONTES DE OCA MEGIAS, Elizabeth et al. Behavior of helicobacter pylori infection in gastroduodenal ulcers in a Venezuelan community. AMC [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.3, pp.356-369. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: helicobacter pylori infection affects around half of the world population. In the present days, the fact that this bacterium is related to the development of the gastroduodenal ulcer, main causal factor, is undeniable. Objective: to describe the helicobacter pylori infection in both the duodenal ulcer and the gastric ulcer. Method: a cross-sectional study was conducted in two Medical Centers in San Felipe, Yaracuy, Venezuela from June 2006 to January 2008. The universe was composed of 1563 patients with suspicion of suffering from a peptic ulcer disease. The sample was selected through a non-probabilistic sampling, which included 186 patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers, diagnosed through an upper digestive endoscopy. The infection was determined by means of serological tests. The data obtained from the primary register were processed according to the statistical system SPSS for Windows. Results: helicobacter pylori infection was found in the 83.3 % of the patients with gastric ulcer and in the 93.5 % of the patients with duodenal ulcer. The infection predominated in the age group of 50-59; the cases of duodenal ulcers were more frequent in women. Conclusions: a high prevalence of helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastroduodenal ulcers was found; it becomes greater with age and bad hygienic practices.
