Background: the comprehensive analysis at the foot of the bed of the hemodynamically unstable patient in critical conditions is a challenge for the intensivist; that is the reason why, interpreting correctly and appropriately the physiopathologic variables related to these events is so important. Objective: to identify some of the metabolic, gasometrical and hemodynamic variables that make possible a better comprehensive analysis of the unstable patient. Method: an analytical descriptive study was conducted in the intensive care unit of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech Teaching Hospital, from January, 2000 to January, 2014. The universe was composed of 533 patients in a state of shock, 332 of them were in a state of non-cardiogenic shock and 210 were in a state of cardiogenic shock. All the patients monitored in an invasive way and in a state of shock in their first 72 hours of evolution, were suggested as inclusion criterion. The model was estimated by using the technique of multivaried analysis and the binary logistic regression and coefficient for each introduced independent variable. Results: the association of mean arterial pressure of 0, 000 and of importance of 0, 99; the excess of base 0, 000 and of importance of 0, 82; of oxygen central venous saturation significance of 0, 000, importance of 0, 89 and oxygen mixed venous saturation with a level of statistical significance of 0,005 and of importance of 1, 061, predominated. Conclusions: the correct interpretation of these variables turns out to be really important for the analysis of the patient in a state of shock since it makes possible conducting a more comprehensive and appropriate analysis of these patients and establishing protocols of more reasonable treatments without wasting time.
