Abstract

Background: the great number of methods and procedures that natural and traditional medicine comprises has an important place in the therapeutic arsenal in Stomatology. Objective: to evaluate the use of natural and traditional medicine in stomatological treatments. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in Ormani Arenado Llonch Teaching Stomatological Clinic in Pinar del Río, from October to December 2014. The universe was composed of 150 patients who received treatment with natural and traditional medicine in the basic stomatological services. The sample selection was non-probabilistic. It was finally composed of 57 patients that received the said treatment during this period. The daily report of the stomatological activities and the clinical histories of the patients were used as sources of information. Results: within the studied sample, female biological sex predominated. Phytotherapy was the most used natural and traditional medicine technique as treatment in basic stomatological services. Camomile, pot marigold and guava tincture were the most frequently used phytotherapeutic medicaments in Stomatology. Conclusions: within the sample, female biological sex predominated as well as the age group 35-39 years old. Phytotherapy was the most used natural and traditional medicine technique. Camomile and pot marigold were most representative medicinal plants in the study.
