ALVAREZ LOPEZ, Alejandro  e  GARCIA LORENZO, Yenima de la Caridad. External fixation in patients with tibial pilon fracture. AMC [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.3, pp.338-344. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: tibial pilon fractures are frequent traumatic lesions. There are alternatives for their treatment. Some of them are conservative and others are surgical. External fixation plays a key role in the latter, with a great number of advantages. Objective: to deepen the importance of external fixation combined with fibular reduction and fixation in the treatment of patients with tibial pilon fracture. Methods: a bibliographic review of 326 published articles in Pubmed, Hinari, Scielo and Medline was carried out through software program Endnote. From that amount, 51 selected citations were used to conduct the review, and 49 of them are from the last five years, including six books. Development: aspects related to the production mechanism, imaging clinical diagnosis, and the most used classifications were discussed. Advantages of external fixation were tackled, as well as the advantages linked with fibular fixation together with external fixation.  Complications were described and divided into ones related to external fixation and other to fractures. Conclusions: the use of external fixation associated with fibular osteosynthesis represents an applicable method, which offers satisfactory outcomes in patients with tibial pilon fracture. When following the steps of this kind of treatment, complications decrease and high rates of bone consolidation are achieved.
