Background:
temporomandibular disorders are conditions in the Temporomandibular Joint, masticatory muscles, associated structures and disorders related to the function of the stomatognatic system.
Objective:
to determine the clinical characterization and severity of temporomandibular disorders in adult patients
Methods:
a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the Dentistry Prosthesis consultation of the municipality of Nuevitas, Camagüey province, in the period from January to July 2018, from a universe of 133 patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders, a non-probabilistic sample was selected constituted by 77 patients, previous sample calculation.
Results:
the female sex predominated and the age group between 40-49 years. It was highlighted as the main degree of dysfunction according to the moderate. Observed emotional stress, occlusal interferences, and bruxism as risk factors was observed. The main clinical manifestations in the patients examined were joint noises in 71.4 %.
Conclusions:
the clinical characterization and severity of the temporomandibular disorders allowed to know a predominance in the female sex, during the fourth decade of life, with a moderate degree of dysfunction, where the main risk factors were emotional stress, occlusal interferences and bruxism. The majority of patients presented main clinical manifestation.
