Abstract

GONZALEZ, Andrés et al. Evaluation of two immunization schedules for production of hyperimmune sera against Leptospira interrogans. Vaccimonitor [online]. 2002, vol.11, n.3, pp.6-10. ISSN 1025-028X.

Polyclonal antisera used for serotyping Leptospira strains must contain a high level of specific agglutinins against a serogroup or serovar and a low cross-reactivity against other serovarieties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare two immunization schedules reported for obtaining Leptospira specific hyperimmune sera in rabbits. The schedules recommended by the International Taxonomic Subcommittee on Leptospira (TSCL) and the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) were compared using reference strains of the serogroups Australis and Tarassovi as antigens. Agglutinin dynamics were evaluated by the microscopic agglutination test and crossreactivity of antisera was determined using 11 different serogroups. Agglutinin titers obtained with the schedule recommended by TSCL were higher than those obtained with the schedule recommended by MINAGRI. Antisera produced by both schedules were highly specific and no cross-reactivity was detected.

Keywords : Leptospira; polyclonal antisera.
