MARTINEZ GUERRA, María Julia; LOPEZ BARREIRO, Marisol; MOREJON RODRIGUEZ, Zulema y RUBALCABA, Yoandra. Actividad antimicrobiana de un extracto fluido al 80 % de Schinus terebinthifolius raddi (copal). Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2000, vol.5, n.1, pp. 23-25. ISSN 1028-4796.
We studied antimicrobial activity of different concentrations of a fluid extract (80 % ethanol) from leaves of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (copal). An small serie of strains of microorganisms was used, including Staphylococcus aureus, e.g. Gram positive, Escherichia coli and Gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans yeast, by means of agar diffusion method. Results obtained suggest that even in smallest concentration (1 %), growth inhibition of all microorganisms is evident, and response is gradually increased with concentration up to 80 %. These results scientifically support traditional use of this plant as antimicrobial, in addition to suggest processing of pharmaceutical formulations allowing to extend its application.
