A bibliographic review on Boerhaavia spp genus, mainly on Boerhaavia diffusa L. and Boerhaavia erecta species, is made. Information is given about the chemical, pharmacological and toxicological aspects of these species found in the following databases: TROPAG & RURAL (1975-1996), AGRICOLA (1992-1997), AGRIS (1993-1994), CAB ABSTRACTS (1992 and 1996), IPA (1970-1998), POPLINE (1998), EXCEPTA MEDICA (1997-1998), BA/RRM (1996), DERWENT BIOTECHNOLOGY ABSTRACTS, MEDLINE (1995-1998) and MAPA (1983-1998). The results obtained allow to predict a wide utilization of the species of this genus in the development of herbal drugs, specifically in hepatic and inflammatory affections.
