The obtention of an extract from the cortex of Aloe vera L., its further characterization and the determination of its average effectiveness against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) are dealt with in this paper. It was concluded that the extract obtained and characterized presents a concentration of total anthracene derivatives of 25.0 ± 5.0 mg %. This extract has an in vitro antiviral activity with a mean toxicity of 3.8 ± 0,3 mg/mL and a effective dose of 0.80 ± 0.05 mg/mL.
